Helping Your Child Become More Confident

Sharing is caring!

We all have nerves and it’s perfectly normal. It’s actually what makes us human.  No one is born confident and it’s something that we develop throughout our lives. Much of it takes place during childhood and adolescence. Everything from the way that you speak to your child to how you treat yourself can all be internalised and influence how they feel about themselves. Confidence is vital to help children foster as it gives them the courage to try new things, attempt challenges, and therefore grow and reach their full potential. We have teamed up with an independent school in Surrey to share ways in which you can do this.

Help Them to Identify Their Strengths

We all have things that we’re good at and are skilled in different ways. It’s just a matter of uncovering them. One way in which you can help your child to build their confidence is by creating and providing opportunities for them to explore their talents as it can help to shape their self-identity and the way in which they see themselves.

Words Of Praise

Your words mean a lot to your child, and they can just as easily damage their confidence as they can build it. Complimenting your child on their strengths and achievements will help them to feel good about themselves and build self-confidence. It’s also important to make sure that you don’t overdo it as compliments that don’t ring true can lead to distrust.

Risk Taking Opportunities

There are always going to be reservations that we have about whatever we want to do. There’s a leap of faith that we must take, otherwise, we’re unable to gain new experiences and grow. While it may be difficult as a parent, it’s important that you allow your child to take some risks so that they can become more confident in themselves and their ability to make decisions.

Ready When They Are

It can be equally terrifying and damaging to push your child into doing things that they don’t want to. It can create resentment and poor relationships with the activities that they are pushed into.

Try and Be Confident

While you may not be the most outgoing person, you can try and set an example for your child. Being their parent, they look up to you. You’re their role model so your actions and attitudes will influence theirs.
