All parents want to set their children up for success and a great way in which you can do that is by teaching them how to read. It’s an essential life skill and one that will allow them to take control of their learning. By learning how to read, they will build their vocabulary and improve their comprehension. As teaching presents its challenges, we’ve teamed up with Mill Hill school to share some of their expert tips.
Start with Phonics
To read, your child will need to be confident with their phonics. These form the foundations of reading and are the individual sounds that letters make. The letter “T” for example, is referred to by its sound which is “tuh”. When teaching phonics, it’s important to only focus on these as using both the names of letters and sounds can create confusion, making learning to read difficult.
Look for Fun Interactive Means
It can be difficult to get children to engage but it’s not impossible. Look at what they enjoy and work with that. For most that are playing games and there are plenty that you can find online to help them with their phonics and blending.
Phonics Songs
Thanks to some brilliant teachers and parents, there are also catchy phonics songs that you can use. They can help children get to grips with the sounds and make sure that they aren’t forgotten.
Be Patient
Children are unique and learn at their own pace. It’s important to be mindful of this and avoid stepping in as it can deprive them of the opportunity to learn and practice.
Read to Them
Whilst your child may not be able to read, you can still read to them, and it can help them to build familiarity with sounds and words. When the time comes for them to blend, they will find it much easier as they will be able to guess what is being spelled.
Spend Time in The Library
The library is a nice place to take the children as there is so much that they can discover and learn. They hold a wide variety of books that are suitable for all ages and span all genres. They will be bound to find something that excites them and struggle to put it down.
Watch Tutorials
Teaching isn’t everyone’s forte but nonetheless, it’s very important that you support your child with their schoolwork at home. It can help them to solidify what they have learned and accelerate their progress in school.
