Good manners, integrity, and generosity are the most appealing personality traits, and they do not happen on its own. They can be learned through strong mentoring.

Every parent wants their kids to become a person with virtues. And it becomes more challenging for the parents of teenagers to teach moral values to their kids as they are easily influenced by others and will abandon the values with which they were brought up. Teens generally begin spending more time away from their families; they still need active and aware parents. Parenting with love and approval, and taking a positive approach even in moments of frustration are effective ways to guide children during the teen years.

Here are some ways to teach your child to live by specific values and become a better person;

Make choices of your values

Your kids learn more from your own values. The virtues you want to instil in your kids, you first need to make choices about your values. Try to instil the values in a way that when in your absence your teen is still able to make right decisions. Typically, it is essential that parents determine their values and which values they want to raise their children with earlier in the child’s life.

Tell them that the use of drugs is not part of their virtue

The increasing rate of drug abuse among teenagers is alarming, and parents are more concerned about their kids. Teach your child about the risks of teen addiction, how it influences their entire personality and can affect their lives. If teens learn that not using drugs is a sign of respect for oneself, for their parents and other family members, then they will try to keep themselves away from this substance abuse. Make them realise that your rules are for their own benefit and they should consider it a matter of respect.

Tell your child to take care of the emotions of others

Calling people names and making fun of other people is not the quality of a person with virtues. Teach your child how to take care of the emotions of the other people and not abuse them. Sometimes making fun of other people can have a serious effect on their psychology. If your child has hurt someone with his behaviour, teach him to apologise to that person. Cultivate the values of kindness and compassion in your child’s personality so that he will turn into a person with excellent virtues.

Set rules and limits

Setting rules and limits is an excellent way to establish healthy expectations for your child. Let your children know about your expectations that what kind of behaviour you are expecting from your kids. It will give them a strong moral and ethical grounding. Be flexible in setting rules and avoid making laws that are too rigid for your teens because it can lead to rebellious behaviour.

If you would like to see your child a person with high virtues and behavior, then be a role model to them. Only this way you will be able to achieve good results.

    Character education can be so challenging, even before kids hit those teen years. I’m watching my nephew grow up to be such a good kid, but I worry about him making bad choices. You are absolutely right that parents, and other adults in a child’s life, need to set an example and live by their values. If you show them what it means to do that, you can trust teens to make good choices in your absence. Thank you, Jenny, for this insightful post.
