My daughter Phoebe is nearly 6 and she has a friend who looks a bit like her, they have the same hairstyles, they sit at the same table at school, they play together, they trade clothes and generally like to be the same. They love to pretend they’re the Shimmer and Shine twins, getting up to tricks and helping people along the way. I got the chance to receive a magical box of Shimmer and Shine toys to review and of course Phoebe loves them. Phoebe and I loved taking a look through the large pink box we got in the post, it was very exciting, we didn’t know what we were getting and there were lots of surprises.
It was lovely to see her face light up and she plays with the dolls, making them enact different stories and scenes. The bubbles were used and I kept the little jewel shaped bottles, they were so cute. The gem stones in a bag were a lovely touch and both Phoebe and Daniel like playing with them – Daniel mostly likes tipping them out but then we make a game of putting them back in the bag!
What we got in the Shimmer and Shine magical box and our thoughts
Float and Sing Palace Friends
This plastic sofa is very arabian nights inspired – the twin girls can sit on either side of the sofa or one can sit in the middle and get transported up and down by pressing the jeweled lever. The pets Tala and Nahal have their own cushions that can be attached on to the chair, or is it a chaise? Or you can detach them and play with them separately. There is also a pink button in the centre of the settee that plays the theme tune and sounds and phrases from the show. Warning: the theme tune is very catchy and I’ve had it stuck in my head more than once! Phoebe is thrilled that the skirts can come on and off as do the shoes – me not so much as it means little pieces can get lost easily, but I try and make that more her problem than mine, there’s only so much hunting for little shoes I can do. It’s the little details that make it special for them. Retail price £29.99.
Shimmer and Shine Talking Doll (Shimmer)
I keep getting them mixed up but I’m reliably informed that Shimmer is the one with pink hair and Shine has blue hair. The talking soft bodied dolls have an outfit that doesn’t come off (yay) but is detailed, and the waistcoat stands proud of the doll. The pink hair sprouts out from the top of the head in their trademark waves and is quite fantastic. When you squeeze their tummy you hear phrases from the character in question and of course songs too. Apparently Shimmer needs her friend Shine – she may have to play with the small Shine doll for a bit. These retail at £24.99 each. I’d say these were probably the best ones to get, as there are no little pieces and it still has the extra features of the songs and phrases. The little ones are cute too though, and the tiger and monkey in the palace set together with the settee make it a good imaginative play set. Phoebe loves them all! All the toys are suitable for ages 3 and up.
