If you don’t have plans to go green, then you should consider making some changes soon. Being eco-friendly is no longer an option but a necessity. But we can only help the planet if we all play our part. As an individual, you can do so much more than you realize. And you don’t need to make any sweeping changes to your life. Here are small tips for making a big impact.
Buy Some Open Forest Land
Buying land for sustainability might sound a little strange at first. But you can purchase forest land beginning from a few hectares. Why would you buy forest land? Well, the land becomes yours, and you can use it as you see fit, within the law. However, the main reason is that you can help promote eco-friendliness by using your forest land for green purposes. Such as rewilding, planting more trees and foliage, or making green space for wildlife habitats. If you are unsure, then visit Tilhill for some great examples of what you can do with forest land.
Get on the Electric Vehicle Bandwagon
You will undoubtedly have heard of electric vehicles by now. Tesla is a perfect example. But many other car manufacturers now offer EVs as well. Electric cars are a great way to start your green journey because they are emission-free. This means they don’t pollute at all when running them because they work using batteries rather than a petrol engine. However, carbon emissions are produced by their manufacturer. And you will contribute to your carbon footprint by charging the batteries. However, you can offset this by using renewable fuels for your electricity.
Go Green with Renewable Energies
The contribution of renewable energy to global electricity demand is increasing all the time. And with time running out, it’s moving quicker than ever. Currently, the renewables sector accounts for 30% of electricity. Not as much as we would like, but there’s been a 10% increase in just two years. You can switch to a green energy supplier to significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Sites like USwitch offer price comparisons and make switching easier than ever. In addition, you could install renewable generators in your home, such as solar panels and wind turbines.
Buy from Companies that Use Recycled Materials
The amount of single-use plastics has become worrying. Not least because of the contribution to landfills but also because of the effects on plant and animal life. Each year, millions of seabirds are injured and killed by things like plastic can rings. And microplastics from the likes of wet wipes pollute the ocean and cause harm to fragile oceanic ecosystems. Fortunately, major brands have heeded environmentalists’ call and are switching to recyclables and plastic alternatives. So you can still enjoy your fast food and fizzy drinks without the guilt.
Switch to Artisan Organic Products
If you look around your home, there will be many products from major brands that cause immense harm to the environment. These include soaps, shampoos and cosmetics. But artisans only use naturally sourced organic, sustainable ingredients for things such as:
- Solid bar shampoo and conditioner that lasts longer.
- Organic body wash and soaps free from parabens and harsh chemicals.
- Makeup such as blush, foundation, and mascara.
- Clothing made with sustainable materials.
- Reusable items such as cups, bottles, and shopping bags.
Many of these products aren’t just made from recycled or sustainable materials. But they are also manufactured in such a way that respects the environment. From the very first stages to a finished product, there is minimal or zero harm to the natural world.
Check Company Websites (But Be Careful)
When going green, it’s best to align yourself with companies you know are considerate of the environment. You can find a brand’s policies on their environmental impact on their official website. Most companies list manufacturing practices, sustainability goals, and fair pay policies. However, be careful because they might be misleading, and a company can say anything they want on their own website. For instance, a well-known drinks maker can claim they use recycled plastic while omitting the damage caused to local areas by their bottling plants.
Use Brands with Transparency
Most corporations aren’t very open about how they go about their business. Fortunately, in response to a changing world, this is changing. Most startups and newer brands are more aligned with customer expectations, such as sustainability policies and ethics. However, major brands within specific sectors, such as big pharma, are yet to follow suit. Perhaps there are legitimate reasons for this. But if one company can do it, it begs the question as to why not all? If a company is too closed off, there’s probably a terrible reason why. So try open brands.
Help Your Employer Go Green
Every workplace has that one person who’s always going on about saving the planet. And that could be you. Or you could join the growing army of concerned citizens trying to make the world a better place. It could be that your employer isn’t anywhere near as green as you would like. So why not ask about incorporating some green policies at the office? Container recycling, carpooling, and saving energy wherever possible. Your employer might be reluctant, but they will hear you out. Especially when you mention the things that can save them money!
Assess a Company’s ESG Strategy
It can be challenging to decide which companies to use when going green. Not all are open and honest as they should be. And some things can be misleading. But always remember to assess their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy. You can then determine if a company is good enough for your custom if they fall within acceptable ranges. For instance, consider a brand’s pollution and environmental impact. Then look into its workers’ rights policies. Finally, research if its board members or owners’ morals and ethics align with yours.
Summary
Going green is a more complex subject than simply using sustainable materials. Although that’s a great start. You need to study a little more to get the most out of going green. And this means revamping your lifestyle to use renewable energies and sustainable products. But you should also consider the brands you use and how their attitude affects the environment.
