I know we are a lot more aware now of our impact on the wider environment than when I was a child. Recycling wasn’t a thing and everything just went in one bin. I was acutely aware though of the hole in the ozone layer and I worried about the future. Now, I feel like most people and countries are actively trying, and whilst it could be better, especially in some countries, I feel like we will all catch up eventually and find a more sustainable way of life. We try hard as a family to minimise our impact on the environment, and here is how we do it. We’re not perfect by any means, I know we could do way more but this is what we are doing for now. I’m always open to more ideas, so if you have some comments, please add them to the blog post at the end.
Reusable sandwich bags
I have tried wax wraps, and I did like them, but after a few uses, they become bobbly and they take on the smell from the sandwiches. We use a lot of ham and it just became unhygienic. Then I switched to silicone reusable sandwich bags that are much better, you can wash them out and reuse them. I have different sizes and my daughter loves them. They have lasted really well, so it’s been a good swap.
Reusable food covers
Again trying to reduce our clingfilm and foil use, I bought silicone stretchy food covers for covering bowls and plates, and pots. They do work well, but certain plates don’t stick too well or certain pot shapes. My husband still favours clingfilm, but I find we go through it far less than we used to, one pack will last us a long time.
Electric car
The last time we got a new car we went for a fully electric car. We have a charging port at home and there are now so many charging points out and about. It’s lovely, so quiet and much cheaper running costs. It’s been the best idea and I’d encourage anyone to go electric. We lease ours through my husband’s work, why not find out about how you can lease an electric car.
Washable sanitary pads
I tried a mooncup but after having tried several different types, I couldn’t get one that I didn’t feel in certain positions. I use a mixture now of washable sanitary pads and sustainable cotton tampons.
Washable makeup remover pads
I got some really adorable washable makeup remover pads, they came with a string bag for washing in the machine and a pretty storage box that I keep on my dressing table. For the occasional times I wear make-up, they’re perfect.
Bamboo interdental brushes
I was so pleased to find these in a local discount shop, I snapped them up. I felt bad about using the plastic ones. My dentist recommended I use these daily as I have receding gums, so I do need to use them, but using sustainable bamboo makes it a better choice for the environment. If you can’t find them locally, Amazon has some for a good price.
No more plastic toys
Where possible we don’t buy plastic toys, at least not first hand. We download games rather than buying them, or get them second hand.
Well, these are some of the ways we as a family are working towards helping the environment. Of course, we also recycle and separate our waste and when we declutter, we give away to charity or donate to other families.
